endangered mountain gorillas

A two-hour drive from the capital Kigali on good roads, brings you to the dramatic landscape of the Virunga Mountains with its eight volcanoes covered in rainforest and bamboo, and home to the critically endangered mountain gorillas. Here visitors are able to hike through the mountain slopes and forest to track the gorillas and experience a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity, both magical and emotional. As one of the most sought-after wildlife activities in Africa, gorilla trekking permits are limited and tightly controlled to avoid any negative impact on the gorillas and their habitat from human beings. The park was the base for the legendary Dian Fossey’s gorilla research, and visitors can visit her tomb or the research centre that continues her legacy.
