The North West Province is home to the Madikwe Game Reserve located on the edge of the Kalahari towards the border of Botswana, just a three-hour drive from Johannesburg. Game was reintroduced successfully when the reserve was established with herds of elephant, buffalo, rhino, cheetah, lion, wild dog, and antelope. Currently more than 60 species of mammals can be found here, and an abundance of birds. Madikwe is a far less frequented safari destination than other South African parks, but an ideal place to go for a wildlife experience for the whole family, including younger children, as the reserve is malaria-free.
