A World Heritage Site and Seventh Wonder of the Natural World, the Victoria Falls are also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, ‘the smoke that thunders’ a name given originally by the local tribe, and first discovered by Dr David Livingstone in November 1855. The spray can be seen from a great distance away, particularly when the river is in full flood. With many incredible ways to experience the Victoria Falls and appreciate the sheer size and magnificence of this landmark, take to the skies above in a helicopter. White water rafting, zip lining, jet boating and microlight flights are on offer for the more adventurous, while the popular ‘African sundowner’ is a must at the end of the day with a relaxing sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. Other activities include exploring the National Park, an elephant encounter with orphaned elephants, an elegant train dinner on the Bushtracks Express or at one of the many local restaurants, or a cultural village and school visit. For those wishing to stay in more tranquil surroundings while still accessible to the Falls and all the activities on offer, consider one of the more intimate luxury lodges located a short distance out of town.
