Classic Highlights of Kenya

Experience some truly classic highlights of Kenya on this 8-day itinerary. Start your journey in Nairobi, the country’s capital and Africa’s fourth largest city, a vibrant and exciting place. Continue on across the Rift Valley to the lakes region of Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru, and finally travel into the world famous Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Your two-night stay in Nairobi will be at Hemingways Hotel in the leafy suburb of Karen. A 45-room boutique hotel, the plantation-style property is airy and spacious with bedrooms featuring a private balcony overlooking the Ngong Hills, as described in Hemingway’s novel. The high-ceilinged en suite rooms have an ambiance of contemporary-chic together with the classic elegance of vintage East African safaris.

At Loldia House on the banks of Lake Naivasha you will experience the life of Kenya’s early settlers. An old farmhouse, and family owned, Loldia House offers nine en suite rooms in either the old family house or in cottages in the grounds. Here you will discover an ideal spot to relax, taste the pleasures of the tranquil Kenyan country life and explore the Great Rift Valley. There are beautiful views across the lake of the dormant volcano, Mount Longonot. Wild animals roam freely on the farm. Dinners are taken in colonial style in the dining room while breakfast and lunch is served under a spreading fig tree in the garden. With two nights at Loldia House, and only two hours from Nairobi, this is the perfect place to begin your exciting safari holiday. Night game drives on the property are available for a chance to see the nocturnal animals including bat eared foxes, aardvarks, leopard, long tailed mongooses, spring hares, nightjars and eagle owls as well as hippos leaving the lake to graze.

Little Governors Camp, where you will spend three nights, is a luxury tented safari camp found in the heart of Kenya’s best game viewing area. Located on the edge of the Masai Mara Game Reserve, the property is family owned and intimate in character with just 17 luxury en-suite tents. All rooms have wooden decks and large verandahs, overlooking the large watering hole that teems with wildlife. The camp is located in a quiet and tranquil area and accessed by boat across the Mara River. The custom designed 4X4 landrovers are left on the other side of the river all ready to go when the time is right for the morning and afternoon game drives. Being located inside the Masai Mara Game Reserve itself, the camp gives guests a unique advantage in the heart of the wildlife action. An area famed for its abundance of animals and the big cats, it also plays host to the phenomenal annual Wildebeest Migration that usually occurs in this region between July and October. With a commitment to service, the exceptionally high training standards of their experienced safari guides and strong bonds created with the local community since setting up over 40 years ago, Governors guests can expect a first class African safari experience, with twice daily game drives in the Masai Mara Game Reserve and surrounding areas, and a visit to the local and traditional Maasai village and community just outside the Reserve. For those interested in the Maasai culture here is a place where life has been unchanged for centuries. There is also a bustling curio market where guests can buy traditional Maasai beadwork to take home as gifts and memories of their trip.

Given the opportunity, an additional activity that should not be missed is a hot air balloon safari at dawn (at an additional cost). Suspended in a basket beneath a rainbow-coloured canopy, you will experience a wildlife viewing adventure with an entirely different perspective. In absolute stillness and silence you drift above the plains, the forest and the rivers of the Masai Mara. It is such a unique experience.
